Emmitt Smith at the Chiropractor

Retired NFL running back Emmitt Smith tweeted yesterday “Got back from LA last night!!! This morning at the chiropractor office”, which included a picture of him supine on an adjusting table. Notice the face paper under his head.

Emmitt Smith has been a long time proponent of Chiropractic. He was quoted in a Fort Worth Star-Telegram Article in 2002, “After that season, I decided to invest in me, to keep me going.”  He went on to say about chiropractic, “You can have a Ferrari body, but your wheels need balancing. I felt if I took care of my body, I could still function when I got older.”

Emmitt is currently a contestant on the ABC reality show Dancing with the Stars All-Stars season 15. The Pro Football Hall of Famer danced his way to victory in 2006 on the show with professional dance partner Cheryl Burke . During that season of DWTS Emmitt’s Chiropractor Dr. Rob Parker, third generation Chiropractor and grandson of Dr. Jim Parker of Parker Seminars and University, was shown during the training footage of giving Emmitt an adjustment.

After a successful career in the NFL, the Pensacola FL native incorporated Emmitt Smith Enterprises, Inc., which includes Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, EJ Smith Construction and real estate company E Smith Legacy.

Logan President Dr. George Goodman

In the past few month 3 chiropractic college presidents have announced their retirement/resignation. Dr. George A Goodman of Logan College of Chiropractic/University, Dr. Fabrizio Manici of Parker University and Dr. James F. Winterstein of National University of Health Science have all publicly announced that they are stepping down within the next year.

Dr. George A. Goodman has presided over Logan for more than 20 years and stated he will retire by March 31st 2012. Prior to serving as President of Logan, Dr. Goodman held the position of Logan's Vice President of Chiropractic Affairs, Clinic Director and Dean of Postgraduate Education. Dr. Goodman will end his educational career serving on the faculty for 44 years.

He leaves the university as the highest paid Chiropractic College President with a salary of $791,418, reported by the Chronicle of Higher Education for 2009. Logan College of Chiropractic University Programs recently was acknowledge as having the lowest tuition of a Chiropractic Institution, a student loan default rate for 2010 of .6 %, and despite recent expansion Logan is debt free. The University also reached their highest level of enrollment at over 1000 students currently.

The Board of Trustees is appointing a committee to conduct a search for the next President of Logan. That search will be focused on identifying candidates who will help Logan continue as a leader in the field of chiropractic education and related graduate level programs according to the school’s press release.

National University of Health President James F. Winterstein, DC, will retire in 2013. A 1968 cum laude Doctorate of Chiropractic graduate, he also completed his residency at National College of Chiropractic and became Board Certified in Diagnostic Imaging in 1970.

After earning his Diplomate in Radiology he was retained as Clinic Director at National. In 1971 he obtained the position of Chairman of the Diagnostic Imaging department. In 1985 he accepted a full time position as Chief of Clinic's Staff, and obtaining his current position as president of National College of Chiropractic in 1986.

During his tenure the institution has grown from a chiropractic college to a university system offering doctorates in Chiropractic and Naturopathic medicine, master’s degrees in advanced practice, acupuncture and oriental medicine, along with a BS program and allied health programs. Over the years Dr. Weinstein has been a vocal proponent for integrative medicine and broadening scope for chiropractic physicians.

The board voted to grant the title of President Emeritus to Dr. Winterstein upon his retirement. He will continue to serve as an employee of National University's new president, Joseph Stiefel DC MS, as long as his services are deemed necessary. Dr. Steifel is currently working on a doctorate in Education and will assume the presidency during NUHS' homecoming in the summer of 2013. He is currently dean of the College of Professional Studies for National University Florida campus and has been employed by the university since 2004.

In August Parker University announced the retirement of Dr. Fabrizio Mancini from the University as well as Parker Seminars. According to a Press release from Parker University "Dr. Mancini made this decision to allow for time to pursue other interests, including public speaking and media efforts to promote chiropractic and his recently published book, and future speaking and media opportunities to promote the health and wellness revolution he is so passionate about leading."

It has been a public year for Dr. Fabrizio, or musingly Dr. Fab, with the release of his latest book: The Power of Self-Healing: Unlock Your Natural Healing Potential in 21 Days!, appearances on Dr. Phil and the Doctors television shows.

Dr. Mancini will be leaving a salary that topped $1 million between Parker University and Seminars.  Parker University tax returns for 2009 show a base salary of $441,371, $284,725 in bonus and $111,048 in other compensation.

Chiropractor Charles Nisivoccia

Drs. Charles Nisivoccia and Craig Klein are good at what they do, too bad it’s not chiropractic. The two chiropractors have pled guilty again to insurance fraud.

The first conviction dates back to May 2003. Dr. Charles Nisivoccia and Dr. Craig Klein pleaded guilty to paying a runner to refer patients to their Clifton New Jersey chiropractic clinic. They each were fined $25,000 and allowed to keep their Chiropractic licenses in New Jersey.

Their second conviction in 2006 stemmed from the same scheme of paying runners for patients that were involved in auto accidents, some of them staged. In 2003 their first year in the new office they billed over $400,000 in insurance claims. After pleading guilty to two counts of filing false motor vehicle insurance claims and two counts of conspiracy they both lost their Chiropractic licenses for 5 years, were forced to pay over $15,000 in fines each to the New Jersey Chiropractic Board, 90 days in jail (2 years suspended) and 500 hours of community service.

The terms for such light sentence resulted form the Chiropractors’ attorneys arguing that another Chiropractor, Dr. Alan Cohen, also busted in their fraud scheme billed over $3 million one year and only received 3 months in jail after pleading guilty.

This time they set up an illegal clinic, Hamilton Rehabilitation Center. Since neither had a license to practice chiropractic in New Jersey they disguised their ownership in the clinic using another doctor illegal under New Jersey state law . Once again Dr. Craig Klein and Dr. Charles Nisivoccia pleaded guilty, this time to theft by deception for submitting charges for fraudulent PIP (personal injury protection) claims to more than 30 auto insurance companies. This time they had some help, Chiropractor Marco Esposito, worked with the convicted chiropractor and pled guilty to the same charges.

Dr. Craig Klein arranged a plea agreement that includes probation and no jail time. Sentencing information for Dr. Charles Nisivoccia has not been released yet.

Chiropractic Health Awareness Month

Put on your ribbons, dig out the shirts, grab a few bracelets, Chiropractic now has an awareness month. October has been labeled National Spinal Health Awareness Month and/or Chiropractic Health Awareness Month. Either way October is going to be full of press releases, promotions, festivities and of course awareness for Chiropractic.

Chiropractic Awareness Activities that we found:

The Michigan Association of Chiropractors (MAC) asked and they received an executive declaration naming October “Spinal Healthcare Month” in Michigan from Governor Rick Snyder.

Henderson North Carolina Mayor Mayor O’Geary and the city council approved proclamation 12-23 honoring National Chiropractic Health Month in October.

The Indiana State Chiropractic Association (ISCA) wants Hoosiers (a term of endearment to Indianans) to increase their Chiropractic Health awareness, so Governor Mitch Daniels proclaimed October 14-20 as Chiropractic Health Week.

The American Chiropractic Association with sponsorship from Foot Levelers and Standard Process created a theme for this year’s campaign. Discover Chiropractic: Find Your Game, which will focus on improving optimal health, wellness and functioning.

National University of Health Sciences ran with the ACA theme to cultivate more patients to their clinics with an athletic twist.  Their press releases dated Oct 5th stated “So while your clinician at an NUHS Whole Health Center may have actually worked at the Olympics, or an Olympic Training Center, or even at the 2012 Paralympics in London, when they come back to our clinics, they utilize that same expertise and care to get you back into the full, rich and rewarding life you deserve.”

Internationally ‘Straighten Up Ireland’ runs this week from the 15th to 21st of October. This an on-going community service initiative of the Chiropractic Association of Ireland, aiming to create an enjoyable everyday program to improve your health and the way your body functions.  It was constructed around World Spine Day October 16th,   which was started by the Bone and Joint Decade, with a theme this year of “Straighten Up and Move”.

Wellspring Seminars- a fusion of the art & science of ancient wisdom with biomedical evidence

Wellspring Seminars is the latest provider to use CE Cruncher to attract more DCs searching for Chiropractic Continuing Education.

Wellspring Seminars provides seminars designed specifically for chiropractors. The 200 Hour Acupuncture Certification Program is a 14 month, 15 weekend medical acupuncture seminar series, which doctors of chiropractic will find thoroughly prepares them to begin practicing acupuncture in states requiring 200 hours or less. If your state requires less than 200 hours, we will structure the course to suit your needs. In designing this program we have included significant hands-on practice (with all supplies included), as well as didactic instruction to accelerate learning and improve clinical results.

Instructor Bonnie L. Walker, DC, Dipl Ac earned her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from National College of Chiropractic in 1989, after attending University of Bridgeport as one of the first graduates of their pre chiropractic program. She received her Diplomate certification in acupuncture (Dipl Ac) from the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) in 1999 and became a NC state licensed acupuncturist in 2005. She is currently an active member of the Acupuncture Council of the North Carolina State Chiropractic Association (NCCA).

Dr. Walker is a founding faculty member of Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine.  She served as biomedical dean and clinical skills instructor from 1997-2007. She was also a student of Jung Tao School from 1993-98, where she graduated from the intensive apprenticeship program in 1997. In 2004 she was awarded her master’s diploma in acupuncture.

Dr. Loren Mathes is taking a stand for Chiropractors

Chiropractor Loren Mathes opened his office in Wichita Falls Texas in 1994. So after a few years in practice when a patient asked if he could do a pre-participation sports physical for her son to compete in junior high football because a visit to her pediatrician would take 6 weeks, he obliged for $25. Parents talk and last summer he helped hundreds of young athletes by preforming an in inexpensive pre-sport physical.

You can imagine his shock when without any public comments or notification the Wichita Falls Independent School District passed a rule during the

August 27th meeting removing Chiropractors from the list of approved healthcare providers tthat could preform sport physicals in the Wichita School District. The request came from the WFISD athletic director Kenny Catney, with the misguided notion that Chiropractors ‘are not studied in the cardiovascular area’.  Remarks were also heard from Brian Hull DO from United Regional on why the exams should be limited to physicians, nurse practitioners and physicians assistants. A call to Dr. Brian Hull’s office revealed that they do not offer sports physicals.

In Texas junior and senior high athletics are governed by the University Interscholastic League. The UIL created by The University of Texas at Austin over 100 years ago to provide educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests in Texas schools. One of their missions is to safeguard the health and welfare of students by requiring physical examinations for participation in athletics. According to the UIL preparticipation physical evaluation form may be completed by a Physician, a Physician Assistant, Advanced Practice Nurse or a Doctor of Chiropractic.

According to UIL guidelines  local school districts have the authority to approve which medical professionals are allowed to provide exams. However it took a lawsuit filed in by the Texas Chiropractic Association in 2002 to have Chiropractors returned to the list of providers after a vote by the UIL to remove them.

Dr. Mathes organized other local chiropractor and spoke with influential local community members including athletic director Catney after hearing about the board vote. On Tuesday in a closed school board work session Mr Catney stated including chiropractors as providers would give parents more options.

School board member Allyson Flack requested at the meeting on Monday that a representative from chiropractors and physicians be present to answer the board’s questions. She is the wife of former board president and pathologist David Flack MD

Kevin Goldstein WFISD Board president suggested to other board members to reconsider the policy banning chiropractors. He said, “We need to align ourselves with UIL and provide options."

Dr. Loren Mathes with the help of Parker University assembled information for the board to review prior to the Monday School board meeting. He is working on coordinating 10 speakers for the Monday October 15th WFISD Board meeting to speak for 3 minutes on why Doctors of Chiropractors should be returned to the list of approved providers for pre participation sports physicals.

Chiropractors given more hurdeles to reimbursement

Again Highmark is delaying the full implementation of their Physical Medicine Management Program (PMMP), until January 1, 2013. Highmark's Physical Medicine Management Program was created to limit Chiropractic, physical therapy and occupational therapy visits by requiring prior authorization for any services after the 8th treatment annually.

Highmark, an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, claims they are extending the soft implementation based on feedback from providers needing more time to understand the program's requirements.

The Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association offers a different view. For months they have been lobbying PA State officials and Highmark to get rid of the new program. Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association President Dr. Daniel Schatzberg stated the software in flawed and unproven.

The PCA’s lobbying has had an impact. On September 28 a press releases from Pennsylvania State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Clearfield County, stated that he is seeking co-sponsors for a resolution urging Highmark Inc. to rescind its use of the Physical Medicine Management Program.

He feels this unfairly hurts patients who have a legitimate need to see a physical or occupational therapist or chiropractor. Rep George said, “Let’s use a little common sense: Who is better to make that determination, a physician or a computer program?”

The Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association also met with the Pennsylvania State Insurance Department Commissioner Michael Consedine. Unfortunately that agency is not capable of stopping the implementation of the program because they lack the authority and the limitations of the current laws.

Another Stroke Story in Manitoba, Canada

The Health Minister of Manitoba, Theresa Oswald, agreed to meet with Pat Chevrier and other members of Winnipeg Chiropractic Stroke Survivors today.  Pat Chevier is an anti-chiropractic crusader who blames her son’s stroke on a cervical manipulation.

Her group is asking the provincial government to remove chiropractic from covered medical services, currently the province pays between 25 and 30 percent of the cost of chiropractic visits. She also wants a ban on ‘high neck manipulations’.

This is not her first attempt at attracting political attention. In 2009 she spoke to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba’s Standing Committee on Human Recourses spouting the same rhetoric .

This story first appeared on CBC,  the Winnipeg Free Press and was picked up by MSN Canada.

Spinal Manipulation and Stroke - Discuss the Facts

Chiropractors should take exception to an article posted yesterday by Meredith Melnick in the Huffington Post’s Healthy Living Section entitled. "Neck Cracking, Dangerous? Spinal Manipulation May Increase Risk Of Stroke".

The article uses ambiguous quotes from Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Michael R. Marks (spokesperson for the American Association of Orthopedic Surgery) in order to publish inflammatory, inaccurate and misleading information about Chiropractic care and cervical manipulation. Apparently Dr. Marks sees no need to back up his statements with hard data and research statistics.

Dr. Marks makes a statement in the article, “When we talk about medical complications, they can be really small, say one percent." This statement is not supported by any research and is inaccurate and inflammatory.

He goes on to say, "because of the Chiropractic manipulation, you run the risk of artery eruption,” and, "A quick, forceful motion is more likely to cause fracture in old bones more than younger bones."

No research exists to support any of these attacks on Chiropractic manipulation. What research does support is this:

Various studies have looked into the cervical spine manipulations and the association of cervical artery dissections shows statistics ranging from 1 in 400,000 strokes to 1 in 5.85 million. 1,2

If Dr. Marks used statistics to make his claim of "1 in 100," he missed the facts that conservatively make that statistic more like .0000025%. That is nowhere near 1%. Plus a Cadaver study has shown that the magnitude from spinal manipulative therapy in not strong enough to disrupt the vertebral artery. 3

This debate should be over. The issue is not causation, but the correlation of patients visiting their Chiropractor from symptoms of a vertebrobasilar artery stroke. Symptoms for vertebrobasilar artery stroke are headaches and neck pain: reasons why many patients visit the Chiropractor. In the Feb 2009 Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics a study describes the same relevance of stroke after a Chiropractic visit as compared to primary care visits. 4 This study was co-authored by Dr. David Cassidy DC DrMedSc, PhD, who was interviewed in the article. The article also cites Chiropractic researcher Dr. Stephen Perle DC, MS, FICC. Both are distinguished experts in the profession on cervical manipulation and stroke.

The article tried to formulate a debate where one does not exist. I have yet to find an article quoting a Chiropractor on the risks and morbidity rate of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Research and outcomes should be discussed by researchers rather than spokespersons wanting to undermine.

The Chiropractic community should not only be concerned about this article, but also the four others published in the last two months in local newspapers attempting to draw a a correlation between Chiropractic cervical adjustments and stroke. As a profession we need to respond to the attacks internationally in Britain and Australia.

Chiropractors need to stand together for the sake of our collective futures. We live in a society that responds to headlines and misconstrued / misleading / unsubstantiated blurbs about research.

Let's give an educated response.

You might be thinking what does this have to do with Chiropractic Continuing Education? The answer is everything.

CE Cruncher was created to make it easier for Chiropractors to find seminars and to make life easier for all of us. As you may have noticed from our news posts, we want to keep the Chiropractic profession informed about what's happening legislatively, socially and educationally. For our profession to thrive we need to put forward a factual, positive, educational and research-based message for our patients and the general public.

When patients come in and mention they heard that they should drink red wine, eat chocolate, drink coffee, or any other myth not science-based, we need to be informed of the true nature of the research and rely on our education.

How long before do you think it will be before you hear someone say, "So and so told me a Chiropractor could cause me to have a stroke."

Be informed and unafraid to back up your statement with research. Comment on the Huffington Post Article, write a letter to the Editor, and share this on Facebook for your patients.

The ACA offers a resource page with links to publications and talking points

NCMIC provides this link of an article explaining the current research.

Leave CE Cruncher a blog comment (below) and let us know how you approach the topic of Chiropractic Care and debunking the assertion that it may cause strokes.

Jon Cryer as Dr. Alan Harper in Two and a Half Men

Jon Cryer won the Emmy for lead actor in a comedy series last night for his role as Chiropractor Alan Harper on the hit tv series "Two and a Half Men". Previously the Doctor of Chiropractic role landed him six Emmy nominations for supporting actor and a win in 2009.

The 10th season of the show airs Sept 27th 2012, which has been in syndication since 2003 and has aired in over 50 countries. "Two and a Half Men" started as a comedy about a care free jingle writer Charlie Harper, played by Charlie Sheen, who has his life is turned upside down when his recently divorced Chiropractor brother moves into his Malibu beachfront home with his adolescent son. Jon Cryer’s role as Dr. Alan Harper became a larger portion of the plot when Charlie Sheen was replaced last year with a new character portrayed by Ashton Kutcher. Over the years a few episodes have featured Chiropractor Alan Harper in his office and treating patients.

California Chiropractors faces changes to work comp

As expected Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 863 into law Tuesday Sept 18, 2012. The new law will increase payments to permanently disabled workers, cheaper insurance rates for employers, and reduce benefits and limiting access to treatment for injured workers.

Chiropractors will face a limit on treatment and would not be able to serve as a worker's primary care doctor after hitting a cap of 24 visits a year. Doctors of Chiropractic will most likely see a reduction in reimbursements, medical necessity reviews, and higher priced liens.

A more detailed discussion of the bill can be found at:

Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College receives NIH Grant

Toronto (Sept. 5, 2012) — The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a major R01 research grant to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in support of its study of spinal manipulative therapy.

This is the largest grant CMCC has received from NIH, with over $933,665.00 invested in chiropractic clinical research. It is the third grant in the past five years that CMCC has received. The two previous grants were being funded in partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

The research, led by CMCC faculty members Dr. Howard Vernon, Dr. John J. Triano and Dr. Tony Tibbles, aims to establish a manipulation control that will provide a baseline against which treatment outcomes may be measured.

“This approach was very valuable, because it has never been done before,” says Dr. Howard Vernon, noting that the results of this grant will help to improve the rigour of future studies by better defining and controlling variables.

“The methods of randomized clinical trials (RCTs), to date, have not been able to differentiate the specific effects of the active treatment component of spinal manipulation from the non-specific effects such as doctor-patient interactions,”

says CMCC Dean of Research and Graduate Education Dr. John J. Triano.

“By combining modern laboratory instrumentation in the form of force sensing table technology with clinical research methods and treatment procedures, the investigators at CMCC have engineered a way to fill this gap.”

“We are thankful for the support of NIH, which reaffirms CMCC’s international reputation for leadership in spinal research,” says CMCC President Dr. Jean Moss. “By enhancing understanding of the specific effects of active

treatment, this research has the potential to demonstrate the benefits of chiropractic care for a variety of conditions and, ultimately, to inform the care we provide to our patients.”

The California Chiropractic Association put up a fight for Work Comp

In the final hours of the legislative session on Friday August 31 2012 the California’s Congress passed SB 863 the “Gut and Amend” workers compensation bill. The 170-page bill passed the Assembly 68-4 and hours later the Senate 34-4. Now the secretive bill complied by large employers and labor unions will pass on to the desk of Governor Jerry Brown for the final signature for the bill’s approval. Considering the Governor’s calls to legislators Thursday and a statement from his office on Friday to support the bill, it will just be a matter of time before it becomes law, scheduled for Jan 1 2013.

The California Chiropractic Association, CCA, worked feverishly for the preceding two weeks after limited information about the bill was published, drastically reducing the role of Doctors of Chiropractic in the workers compensation program. The CCA Governmental Affairs Committee, headed by Dr. Kassie Donoghue, and their lobbying firm worked to combat the legislation and organized Chiropractors resulting in hundreds of calls and letters.

In a press release from the California Chiropractic Association dated Sept 4 2012 stated, ”CCA, the California Applicants Attorneys Association and other groups argued that it was not at all certain that injured workers would benefit from the changes and that reforming a complex, multi billion dollar system should be done in a thoughtful, transparent manner with all the stakeholders at the table.”

Changes impacting chiropractors include:

  • Chiropractors that have treated a patient for 24 visits cannot serve as the treating primary physician
  • Only one pathway for Chiropractors to qualifying to sit for the QME examination
  • Establishes Independent Medical Review panels for to address utilization review
  • Reimbursements currently under Official Medical Fee Schedule (OMFS) will be replaced by lower paying Medicare RBRVS
  • Creates Independent Bill Review (IBR) panels
  • A new lien filing fee of $150.00 as well as a $100 lien activation fee on liens filed before January 1, 2013

Dr. Reggie Gold - Dec 16, 1925 - March 24, 2012

This is an unashamedly personal memento to a dear friend and college flatmate. The accompanying portrait is one of a series of studies I made of Reggie in 1957, because I prefer to remember him In his prime rather than later portraits which showed the ravages of time.

Reggie was born on 16 December 1925 in London and died 24 March 2012 at his home in Bala Cynwyd, PA.

Our story begins in early January 1955. At that time I was living in a rooming house on 14th Street in Davenport and the room across the hall was occupied by Thom Gelardi. Reggie arrived and asked me to join him as a flat mate in a second floor apartment he had leased on Ripley Street.

What a strange combination we made. I was German, had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, never fired an angry shot and left military service with the rank of Corporal. And there was Reggie, a combat veteran of World War II, who had served in the British Paratroopers and held the rank of Major, the youngest Major in the British Armed Forces.

Chiropractic Reggie possessed a photographic memory. Anything he read was automatically recorded in his brain. Ask a question on anatomy and he would quote Gray’s Anatomy, page number, and verbalise what paragraph two contained. He used this ability to hold study sessions prior to exams for groups of classmates.

He worked at the Putnam Museum designing and building exhibits and on many evenings gave dinner parties in various homes selling cookware by using a single burner and cooking complete meals by stacking the various pots on top of each other.

On campus his car was the only new Cadillac. He had purchased it in his previous life of selling cemetery plots in New York and New Jersey.

Like many of our classmates Reggie belonged to Toastmasters Club 1917. Being able to speak on any subject, both pro and con, he won two consecutive Toastmasters District 19 annual speech contests.

At graduation time Reggie was both class president and Valedictorian. While most of us returned to our homes after graduation and started to set up practices, Reggie stayed behind at the college, where he studied chiropractic philosophy which culminated in his thesis “The Triune of Life” which earned him the PhC degree and then established a highly successful practice in Spring Valley, New York.

Reggie supported Sherman College since before its founding in 1973. He retired from his Spring Valley practice to help Thom Gelardi develop the college and served as dean of the college and philosophy instructor and contributed his time to fund raising and recruiting students. The “Triune of Life” became the main philosophy text at Sherman College and has been read and treasured by generations of chiropractors and students.

Reggie left Sherman College in the late 1970s and helped establish and serve as president of another straight chiropractic college, ADIO Institute of Straight Chiropractic in Pennsylvania.

He traveled the globe spreading the chiropractic message and was responsible for inspiring hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people of all ages to pursue a career in chiropractic.

He was a popular guest lecturer at Sherman College and played a vital role in the college’s student recruitment efforts. In 1989 he was named Sherman College Career Advisor of the Year. He freely donated his time to visit the college to address and inspire the student body, represent the college at career fairs, and assist the college’s fund-raising efforts. Additionally, he has contributed a great deal of financial stability of the college and has provided for the college’s future in his estate planning.

Reggie’s strong communication skills, visionary insight and unfailing dedication to the chiropractic principle continually drew him into the spotlight. In 1990 Sherman College honoured him by dedicating that year’s Lyceum program to him and naming him Chiropractor of the Year. Among his numerous awards and honours he has received the International Humanitarian Award presented by the World Congress of Chiropractic and the Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities degree from Sherman College. He was named a Fellow of the College of Straight Chiropractic by the Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations. The Palmer University system honoured him with the highest award they can bestow: Fellow of the Palmer Academy (FPAC)in 1972.

In the early 1970s Reggie visited Australia for the first time, spent some time with us in Wagga Wagga, then we moved on to Melbourne, where Reggie gave a series of lectures both to the profession and to the general public. For some unknown reason Reggie needed to be adjusted and in his suite at the Sheraton Hotel in Melbourne we used a number of telephone books to act as a headpiece, and I toggled his Atlas. He commented that it was one of the best adjustments he had received in quite a while.

Over the years we usually ran into each other at Palmer Homecomings, where he used to lecture on philosophy to students at the home of the Delta Sigma Chi fraternity.

When in 2007 we met again at the 50th reunion of our class at Homecoming in Davenport we were astounded to see how many of our class mates had passed away.

Reggie is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dr Irene Gold.

Growing up in New York City, Irene Gold developed a strong interest in her own education and put herself through college, initially earning a degree as a Registered Nurse from Fifth Avenue Hospital in NYC. She worked in numerous areas of nursing for fifteen years after graduation from nursing school. The RN was followed by a BS in Nursing Education, and a MA in Health Education.

After meeting and marrying Reggie Gold, the most dedicated and outspoken chiropractor and chiropractic philosopher of all time, Irene’s education grew to include that field as well. Irene graduated from Columbia Institute of Chiropractic (now New York Chiropractic College) with her Doctor of Chiropractic in 1974.

Prior to conducting board reviews, Dr Irene taught in several different chiropractic colleges for a number of years; first for Columbia Institute, then Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic, and finally ADIO Chiropractic College. Her years at Sherman College included several years as academic dean.

The board review classes started at Sherman College in 1975 as a way to help the students pass the National Board. The Irene Gold Associates organization became incorporated in 1978 in the state of Pennsylvania. She takes great pleasure in having successfully prepared many thousands of doctors for licensure since that time.

Now the question arises, who can and will arise to try and fill the shoes of one of the greatest Chiropractic Philosophers of all times? Reggie, you are going to be missed by thousands. Vale, until we meet again in the great beyond.

Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association Fights BCBS Highmark

On Aug 29th 2012 days before the Physical Medicine Management Program (PMMP) was set to start Highmark sent out a press release stating they decided to institute a “soft implementation”. They went on to explain that the PMMP, which is intended to limit chiropractic and physical therapy visits, would not issues any denials based on medical necessity or appropriateness with dates of service prior to Oct. 1, 2012.

The Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association since the first remarks from Highmark about PMMP has been mouting an attack on the behalf of chiropractors against this attempt at limitng a patient's use of benefits. Two weeks ago the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association’s Board of Directors authorized an aggressive fund-raising campaign to stop the Highmark Physical Medicine Management Program, jokingly known as ‘pimp’. As of today they have raised $58,400 with the goal of $150,000. Discussing the PCA Legal Fund PCA President Dr. Schatzberg stated, “Our practices and those of the future will be irrevocably changed if this policy (Highmark’s PMMP) is allowed to be implemented. Let’s be clear: this is not our final battle; in fact, our fight is just beginning.”

The PMMP system requires chiropractors and physical therapists to submit prior authorizations through Highmark's NaviNet after 8 visits. According to the press release providers are still expected to submit requests for authorizations for treatment for September of 2012 and Highmark reserves the right to review any of those payments after they have been received.

Dr. Fabrizio Mancini President of Parker University

Press Release from Parker University Board of Trustees

Parker announced today that Dr. Fabrizio Mancini is retiring from his position as President of Parker University and Parker Seminars. Dr. Mancini made this decision to allow for time to pursue other interests, including public speaking and media efforts to promote chiropractic and his recently published book, and future speaking and media opportunities to promote the health and wellness revolution he is so passionate about leading.

Under Dr. Mancini's leadership, Parker University and Parker Seminars have grown and flourished well beyond any of the expectations held by the Parker Board of Trustees nearly 13 years ago. Since his appointment, the Parker brand has become synonymous with high-quality education and the foundational principles that define chiropractic today. Under his care, Parker has grown into one of the leading chiropractic institutions in the world, with nearly 6,500 alumni now proudly claiming Parker as their institution of choice. In addition to his impact on the university, Dr. Mancini has gladly accepted the role as one of the most influential leaders in the profession, appearing on television, the Parker Seminars stage, in print, as an author, a speaker, and any other opportunity he is given to spread the chiropractic message and raise awareness of the health benefits of regular care.

He leaves the university well-positioned for future growth, with new academic programs designed to compliment chiropractic ready for introduction in January 2013, a full class of incoming chiropractic students for the fall 2012 trimester, and a record setting crowd of attendees set to attend Parker Seminars Toronto next month.

Dr. Mancini will work with Parker through November 30, 2012, until a new president can be identified and hired. A presidential search committee has been formed by the Parker Board of Trustees to begin the search immediately. This transitional period will allow him to play a role in two major upcoming events: Parker Seminars Toronto (September 20-22) and Parker University Homecoming (October 26-28).

The Parker University Board of Trustees would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Mancini for his compassionate dedication to Parker and wish him well in his future endeavors. The board recognizes his impact on Parker and the chiropractic profession, an impact that will continue for many years to come.

Chiropractors in California Under Attack

California’s Workers compensation program is about to face an overhaul bill in the last days of the legislative session. The SB 863 bill, still unavailable for public viewing, is the mastermind of a small group of labor unions and large employers including grocery store chain including Safeway Inc. and the Walt Disney Co. The top of the list for attack - Injured Workers  and Chiroprators.

Since spring big busineess and labor unioiins have been working on language for bills that would cut the costs of the $16-billion-a-year workers' compensation system. The proposed changes would increase benefits for disabled workers by about $700 million, save employers twice that amount, while cutting benefits for Chiropractors and medical treatment.

Attorneys, Doctors and Injured Workers groups have not been allowed in on the discussion of the overhaul. The only published information about SB 863 includes 45 points of proposed amendments. The most striking to chiropractors includes eliminating the Qualified Medical Examination (QME) Evaluators exam for Chiropractors, requiring DCs to pass the medical QME exam. Currently besides the exam California Chiropractors are required to have 300 hours of post grad education to even qualify. Chiropractors that have treated a patient for 24 visits cannot serve as the treating primary physician. It will establish a Independent Medical Review system for resolving health insurance disputes, and eliminate the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board authority over those claims. Reimbursements currently under Official Medical Fee Schedule (OMFS) will be replaced by lower paying Medicare RBRVS.

The California Chiropractic Association, CCA, in a press release dated August 21, 2012: Doctors of Chiropractic provide effective cost- efficient care without the use of drugs or invasive surgeries and should be in any health care system focused on prevention and wellness. Some patients, such as firefighters and police officers need ongoing chiropractic care to stay on the job, but the cost for those visits is among the lowest charged by most health care providers. In fact, data from recent Workers’ Compensation Research Institute (WCRI) economic reports show cost increases in California’s workers’ compensation system actually stem from increased diagnostic testing and use of prescription drugs and addictive pain killers; which are not, in any way, part of the doctor of chiropractic scope of practice.
