Life University Marietta Georgia

It has been over 10 years since Life University had their accreditation temporally suspended by the Council on Chiropractic Education. After a federal court lawsuit, a year of questioning and transferring students, and the resignation of founder Dr. Sid Williams, the CCE and Life University reached a settlement out of court. Under the compromise Life University retroactively had their accreditation restored, unfortunately Life’s chiropractic students were caught in the middle.

Some of those students that transferred to other institutions or had their licensure postponed sought restitution through the legal system. On August 13 Fulton County State Court Judge Wesley Tailor dismissed the last suit against Life University from students disgruntled over accreditation. He tossed out claims from a 2010 lawsuit including almost 150 former chiropractic students alleging breach of contract, fraudulent concealment and racketeering. Judge Tailor said that Life University had no contractual obligation to retain its accreditation, and could not disclose the issues with accreditation under confidentiality rules with CCE. He then granted summary judgment to Life University and its trustees at the time.

The Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) is the agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education for accreditation of programs and institutions offering the doctor of chiropractic degree.

Life  University founded in Marietta, Georgia in 1974, is a health  sciences institution most known for its chiropractic program, the largest in the world. Life University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to  award four year undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of health care, science, business and general studies fields, and also has programmatic accreditation through the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) and the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). The mission of Life University is to empower students with the education, skills and values necessary for career success and life fulfillment, based on a vitalistic philosophy.

Chiropractor Jim Carey - Echoes from Home

Echoes from Home, an historically edited novel, tells a story of the Civil War first hand through the eyes of a young confederate soldier named Joshua Miller. The novel follows him through letters and narrative of his leaving home, the battlefield, his friendships, and his loved ones waiting for him to return.

Dr. Jim Carey started his professional path as a social worker then a chiropractor, harboring a passion for writing for 20 years. Describing himself as a story teller, he originally planned to write a general Civil War novel with battles, dates and historical names. Early in the process he developed the main character Joshua Miller and transformed the story using the war as a backdrop for the young soldier’s adventure. Dr. Carey’s next literary project will be a collection of stories about the Civil War, tentatively entitled The High Price of Freedom.

Dr. Carey graduated in 1986 from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa. He has maintained a private practice in Sheboygan Wisconsin for 25 years. He currently shares his professional time between his chiropractic practice and his writing.

The book is available at Book World at Memorial Mall in Sheyboygan, Amazon or from the author.

For more information about the author or the book, email Dr. Jim Carey.

Chiropractor Dr. Michael Douglas with Usain Bolt

The summer Olympics have drawn to a end with much visibility and support for chiropractors in an athletic setting. The 2012 London Olympics marked the first inclusion of chiropractic into the official polyclinic in the summer games. The Vancouver Winter Olympics was the initial introduction of chiropractors into the multidisciplinary medical services team provided by the Olympic Organizing Committee. 28 official chiropractor worked along side physical therapists, dentists, medical doctors, osteopaths, and even an eye clinic at the 23 million dollars facility in the heart of the Olympic village in London.

The first Olympic Chiropractic credit goes to Dr. Leroy Perry. In 1976 at the Montreal Canada Summer Olympic games the island nation of Antigua chose Dr. Leroy Perry as their team doctor. During subsequent years of Olympic games Dr. Parry had treated athletes from over 40 counties.

Many chiropractors personally accompanied Olympic teams from the United States, Canada, Jamaica and many places around the world. Numerous pictures have surfaced on the web of Dr. Michael Douglas, the official Chiropractor of the Jamaican Olympic Team since 1996, adjusting Olympic gold medal sprinter in the mens 100m and 200m Usain Bolt. Indian Wells California chiropractor Corina Morrison treated 12 swimmers this year in London, her fourth Olympics. Notably Dr. Morrison worked with US bronze medalist Natalie Coughlin (her 12th Olympic medal) and Serbian Milorad Cavic.

Chiropractor Dr. Curt Draeger not only brought his skills as a chiropractor to the Olympics, but also his cold laser. London Gold and silver medal U.S. decathletes Ashton Eaton and Trey Hardee were among the Olympians that Dr. Draeger treated. This was his third Olympics treating members of the US track and field team, working with them since 2003.

The next generation of Olympic Chiropractors are already hard at work. Four Life University chiropractic sport science master students accompanied by Sport Health Science associate professor Dr. Keith Rau treated athletes at the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials for track and field. U.S. water polo team goalie Merrill Moses he will be staring soon at Palmer West, the alma mater of his team coach and former Olympian Dr Terry Schroeder. After sprinting for Germany in London Sven Knipphals will complete his third year at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC).

The Anglo-European College of Chiropractic hosted the Icelandic Olympic team, at the suggestion of AECC Chiropractic graduate and 2000 Sydney Olympic Icelandic decathlete Jon Arnar Magnusson. The AECC hosted and supported the athletes at their state-of-the-art clinic and facilities in Bournemouth, a hundred miles outside of London.

Chiropractor Dr. Tom Greenway of the European Chiropractors’ Union said, “At the Olympics in 2012 we will be able to show them exactly what we can do, how well we can do it and how effectively that can dovetail with physiotherapy, osteopathy and massage…. We will have 74 days to show the world of sport how great and how effective a chiropractic approach is in the medical team.” Dr. Greenway held the main responsible for arranging chiropractic care at the summer London Olympics.

Chiropractors that have served in an official capacity at an Olympic Games can apply to the International Academy of Olympic Chiropractic Officers. The IAOCO merged last year into the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic as the FICS' Olympic Chiropractor's Commission.

Win for Chiropractors in South Africa

The Western Cape (Southwestern province of South Africa) High Court this week dismissed an exception raised by the Road Accident Fund (RAF) in its defense of a claimant that suffered a spinal injury in a car accident. The fund is a social security safety fund in South Africa providing compulsory social insurance coverage to all users of South African roads.

The RAF was trying to persuade the court unsuccessfully that a chiropractor is not a ‘medical practitioner’ within the meaning of section 24(2)(a) of the Road Accident Fund Act and that, as a result, her claim was not acceptable. Judge Binns-Ward said the purpose of section 24(2)(a) of the Road Accident Fund Act was clear, and was a matter on which there was no excuse for uncertainty or doubt by the fund.

According to the report, the judge said in one case, a lower court Judge Craig Howie emphasized that it was the function of the fund is to investigate and settle compensation claims under the statute and to defend matters only ‘when litigation is responsibly contestable’.

He added the healthcare professional best qualified to give information on the nature of the injuries sustained and the treatment already given or to be expected, was the practitioner who had been involved in treating the claimant as a patient.

The history of Chiropractic in South Africa has had many bumps along the road. The first chiropractors in South African date back to the 1920’s. By 1939 a national association was formed, South African Manipulative Practitioners Association. Unfortunately in 1971 a bill was passed in the South African parliament that closed the register to any new Chiropractors and Chiropractic students, stalling the growth of the profession. The same year all of the chiropractic organization merged forming the present day Chiropractic Association of South Africa CASA.

In the interim a few brave souls, known as 'ghosts' practiced outside the law. After much protect in 1981 the South African Medical and Dental held a hearing and voted 17 to 16 against the inclusion of Chiropractic. They rejected Chiropractic as being unscientific and having no place whatsoever within the realm of "medicine".

Not until 1985 was the practice of Chiropractic legal again when the Associated Health Professions Service Board was created by the Ministry of Health to regulate Chiropractic and other professions such as Homeopathy, Osteopathy, and Naturopathy. Currently the Country has two accredited Chiropractic Education programs: Durban Institute of Technology and University of Johannesburg .

Next year South Africe and the CASA have the privilege of hosting the World Federation of Chiropractic 12th Biennial Congress to be held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban, South Africa, April 10-13, 2013

Dr. Jill Hartzell- Jill George

Dr. Jill Hartzell (aka Jill George) is a Chiropractor by day and a Racecar Driver the rest of the time. The 2006 Palmer College of Chiropractic graduate has a passion for dirt Late Model car racing and with her permission CE Cruncher re-posted an article she contributed to the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

I try to do something no other woman in the country is doing.

I race super late model dirt cars across the country and I do it against the very best men and boys out there. Nearly all the guys I race against are full-time drivers. They race for a living.

It is a huge challenge and, like many other sports, there are huge highs and devastating lows, sometimes within minutes of each other.

I have been an athlete all my life. I was a state champion in track at Newton High School, a Missouri Valley Conference track athlete at UNI and a Golden Gloves boxing champion. Nothing, however, compares with the difficult nature of trying to maneuver a 2,300-pound, 850-horsepower dirt late model car around all sorts of different race tracks from West Virginia to Florida to Minnesota and all points in between.

I race under my maiden name, Jill George. I do that because my husband (former UNI athletics director Rick Hartzell) said if someone wants to be mad at me, he doesn’t want the family name attached. He is kidding of course, but the Jill George name has a nice ring to it and is my brand of sorts.

I have raced ARCA cars at Daytona, tested a Roush-Yates car at Talledaga — where I went faster than 200 miles per hour — and raced ASA asphalt cars at Hawkeye Downs, the Milwaukee Mile and at my home of Newton.

But dirt racing is my passion and where I have had some moderate success. People would find it unusual, but my goal every night is to make the feature race, not necessarily to win. Just making the race is a win for me most nights because the high level of the competition and my own expereince and ability. I try to learn something new every night, to get better, to do my very best and I try to keep our equipment in one piece.

Most of the time, that is what happens. I have had a couple of scary wrecks this summer, one at Middlebourne, W.Va., when my throttle stuck wide open. I got bumped in the right rear corner of my car and I hit the wall head on, completely destroying the car. I spent night at a West Virginia hospital.

I am not scared, maybe not very smart, but I like the speed, I like the extreme challenge of what I do, and I like to compete.

I get treated with great respect by nearly everyone I race against. Many nights, especially if I am doing pretty well, some of the local racers we race against have trouble getting beat by a woman and things can get a little rough. But the professional guys I race against on the World of Oulaws or Lucas Oil tour treat me just like anyone else. They race hard, but clean and they respect their own equipment and mine.

Most of my issues come when I make a mistake, or we don’t have the car just right and then some things can happen that are not so good. But the challenge, and the highs that you get from some success bring you back to try again and again.

The car I drive is 2011 Rocket chassis, made in West Virginia. It has Chevy Camaro decals but the cars are really all the same in terms of body styles, they just carry different stickers and sponsorship. I am sponsored by Schaeffer Oil, Base Racing Fuel, Mike Molstead Motors of Charles City, Dirt Late Model Magazine, Hartzell Family Chiropractic (my business) and Gale Force Shocks.

I have two cars, which is necessary if you are going to race all over the country. My motors produce about 825 horsepower and the cars can reach speeds of 125 mph on dirt, which is not always great for traction. Often, it is just like driving on the ice and snow in Iowa. It can be very slick, and that makes finding traction really tough.

For instance, most of the time the NASCAR cars you see on TV are not chasing traction. They are trying to find speed, good handling and cars that turn well. Our cars are built to turn left, and when you can find good traction and get a car that will “stick” to the race track you can really run well. If not, you have to back off the gas, not spin the tires due to all the horsepower and “slow down to go faster” if that makes sense.

We run a variety of compounds of tires, and if the car set up (shocks, springs, and other adjustments) and the tires are right, then these cars are really fun to drive. If those things are not just right then these cars can be a real handful to manage.

Most nights we run hot laps (practice), then we qualify with the fastest timing cars starting up front in the heat races. The heat race finish sets up the feature line up. You only get paid for the feature race finish. In the feature, 24 cars start and many nights there will be 40-plus trying to qualify. So, making the race is not easy.

The feature races usually pay $10,000 to win and $700 to start. Race gas is $8 a gallon, tires are $150 each, motors can run anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 each (although ours are on the low end of that) and the cars themselves are worth about $18,000 or so.

The really good guys can make $150,000 to $200,000 a year or more. But when you factor in the costs for travel, diesel fuel, food and expenses making a living racing is not easy to do.

I am not a professional racer. I am a chiropractor by profession and Rick and I, with the help of some sponsorship, are able to race like we do as long as we watch our pennies. I make some money selling t-shirts and other souvenirs to fans who root for me and are happy to see a woman try to do something in a “man’s world.”

I am not trying to be Danica Patrick or anyone else for that matter. I am just trying to do something very hard that is a huge challenge, do it to the best of my ability and get better every night.

You can keep up on Jill’s racing career .  Interested in sponsorship opportunities contact MPM Marketing

Kinesiology Taping at the Olympics

The London Olympics have started and the focus on international elite athletes will dominate the media. Every year the amount of colorful tape adorning the bodies of these athletes seems to grow exponentially, almost as if it is alive. The tape may not be alive but the enthusiasm in chiropractic for kinesiology taping sure is.

Kinesiology taping has progressed from a soccer player’s sprained ankle to a therapeutic resource with protocols for whiplash, shoulder strain, post-op and even torticolis. Many DCs are taking the time to learn techniques to aid their patients in sports as well as general practice.

According to the various manufacturers kinesiology taping offers: reduction in swelling and edema, improves joint mechanics and muscle function, impacts skin proprioception to reduce pain, reduces muscle spasm and fatigue, and aids reducing scar tissue and post surgical bruising.

Chiropractors at the London Olympics are covering athletes in various tapes and national colors. KT Tape Pro produced “JAM” Kinesiology Tape for the Jamaican Track and Field Team in the iconic colors of the Jamaican Flag.

Keep an eye out at the London Olympics for SpiderTech on Canadian triathlete and Olympic gold medalist Simon Whitfield. When asked about kinesiology taping he stated "Aches, pains and more serious injuries are a part of the sport. SpiderTech tape helps me manage pain and greatly improve my recovery time."

Kinesio Tape, founded by Japanese Chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase in 1979, took center stage at the last Olympics covering many athletes, most notably American Beach Volleyball Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh.

Dr. Kevin Jardine, Developer of Neuro-Structural Taping Technique and original creator of SpiderTech products, explains "Kinesiology tape is a crucial part of providing top level care to both world class Olympic athletes as well as your general patient base. The ability to extend the benefits of your treatment beyond the office can often make the difference in an athlete's recovery. The tape can even be worn during competition allowing the athletes to perform at their best.”

Chiropractors that are interested in expanding their practice can learn more about kinesiology taping and receive Chiropractic Continuing Education Hours with these seminars:

The Expansion of Master Programs at Chiropractic Colleges

The face of Chiropractic Continuing Education is changing, master degree programs are developing at many Chiropractic Colleges. Usually a division of online and classroom hours, designed for a practicing chiropractor to expand their knowledge and practical abilities in a 2-3 year program. Logan College of Chiropractic and University of Bridgeport offer dual degree programs, offering students the ability to graduate with a DC and a Masters.

Northwestern Health Sciences University announced this week the creation of two new graduate degrees programs. The newly formed College of Graduate Health Sciences will offer a Master of Health Science in Clinical Nutrition and a Master of Health Science Clinical Chiropractic Orthopedics, for accepting students for the Winter term starting January 2013. They are fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Northwestern was previously approved to offer a Master of Health Science degree in Diagnostic Imaging, which is not currently accepting applications.

The new degrees are aimed at health care providers interested in enhancing their knowledge and education in areas that can expand the services offered to patients. The curriculum consists of 40 graduate credits within three years, with 30 percent of the coursework completed online and 70 percent completed in a series of weekend seminars. The orthopedics program was developed in cooperation with the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists, will qualify a doctor of chiropractic as eligible to sit the orthopedic specialty board certification examination and leading to the Diplomate Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists (DACO).   Full Story from Northwestern Health Sciences University.

Palmer College of Chiropractic Continuing Education

Palmer College of Chiropractic has re-established its tax-deductible status with the Canadian government. This was made possible with the efforts of the College as well as Robert Corbett, D.C. (Davenport ’75), one of the College’s alumni advisors. Dr. Corbett brought it to the College’s attention that Canadian doctors were not able to contribute money to the College and have it count as a tax deduction.

“It was Dr. Corbett’s persistence and good work that got the ball rolling for us at Palmer,” said Mickey Burt, D.C., director for Alumni. “Once again our alumni from Canada may give money to the College and have it count as a tax deduction for them. This, in turn, can be a big plus for our Canadian students.”

Chiropractic Continuing Education Nutrition

Several Articles have been written in the past few months about leaked documents from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly the American Dietetic Association, about their proposed political strategies for limiting market competition for its Registered Dietitian members. These articles also call into question their motives professionally and the sponsorships they receive from large food corporations (Pepsi, general Mills, Coca Cola and Kellogg).

An excerpt from the American Dieteric Assoication HOD Backgrounder House of Delegates February 2011 Market Place Relevance Regulatory and Competitive Environment of Dietetic Services

C. Other Competitors Sampled

4. Chiropractors

One of chiropractors’ most recent nutrition-related victories was in January 2010, when the New Jersey legislature radically changed chiropractors’ scope of practice from specifically denying them the authority to recommend nutritional supplements and conduct nutritional counseling to specifically permitting those tasks. In fact, chiropractic groups have long sought to solidify their professional reputation in the field of nutrition, in large part to protect the “almost 90 percent of practicing U.S. doctors of chiropractic [who] offer ‘nutritional counseling, therapy or supplementation’ to their patients.” In June 2009, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) formally created the Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutrition to “advance clinical nutrition while at the same time enhancing the health of chiropractic patients.”

Registered Dietitians and DTRs would be well-served to be wary of chiropractic involvement in aspects of nutrition care services, particularly the development of relationships between chiropractors and non-CDR credentialed nutrition professional organizations such as NANP. Lastly, RDs should be vigilant in noting whether a dual-credentialed chiropractor/CCN violates either a state dietetic practice act or state or federal regulations for practicing dietetics without a license and/or without the 900 hours of required supervised dietetics practice.

Any doubt that Chiropractors are on their targeted list might be persuaded by the American Dietetic Association Journal article on the Sources of Nutrition Information Among Practicing Chiropractors in the United States

Dr. Samantha P Adams

Dr. Samantha P. Adams was a groundbreaking woman in chiropractic and her community. A graduate of the Chiropractic Institute of New York (1944-1968), she was the first African-American woman licensed as a chiropractor by the Ohio State Medical Board.

Samantha Adams opened her practice in 1950 in her hometown of Toledo, retiring in the 1970’s. She chose chiropractic as a profession after a Woodville Chiropractor that helped her sister.

A determined woman, she didn’t let her small frame, 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighed about 120, keep her from adjusting any patient.

"She was strong," her daughter said. "With adjustments, it's all in the leverage and the pivoting, and she knew how to do that. She enjoyed helping people get better without filling them up with a lot of medication."

Her vast accomplishments included:

First woman to serve as president of the Toledo branch of the NAACP in 1971
First African American woman elected to the Toledo Board of Education in 1977, later became president
First African American woman elected in Lucas County
Named a “Legend” by the African American Legacy Project in 2003
Awarded a Toledo Glass key to the City by former Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner in 2009

Dr. Samantha Adams died Tuesday on her 86th birthday. The family had stated that she had not recovered from a recent stroke.

She is survived by three daughters Dr. Karen Adams-Ferguson, an obstetrician-gynecologist and Cecelia Adams and Denise Adams Onyia, both former Toledo Public School administrators; son, James Lawrn Adams; sister, Glacie Reed; six grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

Chiropractic May Reduce Deaths And Injuries From Falls Among Older People

Chiropractic care for older people may reduce deaths and injuries from falls according to researchers taking part in a study by Auckland University and the Chiropractic Research Centre (CRC) at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic on the neurophysiological effects of chiropractic on the brain.

According to chiropractor, PhD candidate and principal investigator of the study Dr Kelly Holt, falls often occur due to a decline in nervous system function with advancing age. This can lead to a loss of balance, or poor control of the limbs, which dramatically increases the risk of falling.

There is no doubt that falls are a major health concern for older adults. They are a significant cause of death, injury and loss of quality of life. In people over the age of 65, falls account for over 80% of injury related hospital admissions and they are the leading cause of unintentional injury related death in older adults in New Zealand.

Dr Holt explains: `In the past ten years researchers at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic have objectively demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments can change aspects of nervous system function including the way the brain controls muscles, responds to sensory stimuli and controls limb function which are all important when it comes to preventing falls.’

Earlier this year Dr Holt published a review of The Effects of Manual Therapy on Balance and Falls in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics[1]. This study found that although a number of studies had found statistical links between manual therapies and an improvement in balance there was a need for more research to better understand the clinical implications.

He says: `This latest New Zealand study will investigate the relationship between chiropractic care and components of the nervous system important for maintaining balance and preventing falls in older adults. To study this relationship the researchers will follow and assess two groups of older participants at regular intervals over a 12 week period. One group will be under regular chiropractic care for 12 weeks and the other group will receive no chiropractic care during the study but will be offered the programme at the completion of the study. Besides tracking changes in nervous system function the study will also monitor the participant’s quality of life.’

Dr Heidi Haavik, the Director of Research at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic adds: `We have been looking at the effects of chiropractic on the function of the nervous system for the last decade. This latest collaboration between the College and the University of Auckland is part of Dr Holt’s PhD research for which he is receiving a Senior Health Research Doctoral Scholarship, one of only three awarded by the University each year.’

`We hope that by better understanding the impact of chiropractic care on this group of patients we may be able to improve the way we care for older people and reduce their risk of falling.’

Dr Paul Basile and Dr Barbara Basile

Chiropractors Paul and Barbara Basile had a private practice in west Allentown PA for 30 years, now each will be spending more than 5 years in federal prison. Drs. Basile together established Lehigh Valley Non-Surgical in 1997, having previously run the Basile Health Clinic.

The Basiles problems started with the IRS almost 15 years ago when Paul Basile DC , 1980 graduate of Sherman College of Chiropractic, decided the Internal Revenue Service didn't have authority to collect taxes from him and his wife. From 1995 to 2001, according to prosecutors, the Basiles did not pay their taxes and owed over a million dollars to the IRS.

Then between 2002 and 2005 Dr Paul Basile and Dr. Barbara Basile removed themselves from Lehigh Valley Non-Surgical’s payroll and paid themselves with checks weekly from LVNS or other companies they controlled. Totaling another $150,000 in unpaid taxes.

Federal Prosecutors also claimed the couple used a company they created in 1997 in Colorado, Nyland Inc, to conceal income Paul Basile DC earned as a coach with Breakthrough Coaching LLC, as well as for consulting services he provided to Corporate Health of America, LLC.

Other charges in the case resulted from bogus checks totaling $1,351,380 that Dr. Paul Basile sent the IRS for payment on a closed bank. Around the same time he submitted a series of fictitious documents titled, "Prepaid Foreign Bills of Exchange” as payment of his and his wife’s income tax liabilities.

A U.S. District Court in December convicted Paul Basile, 55, of one count of conspiracy to defraud the government, five counts of tax evasion and two counts of filing false income tax returns. This week Judge Paul S Diamond sentenced Paul Basile to 6 years and 6 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. Barbara Basile, also 55, was convicted of one count of conspiracy to defraud the government, five counts of tax evasion and two counts of filing false income tax returns. She was sentenced to five years and three months in prison, also followed by three years of supervised release.

Since being held in prison Dr. Barbara Basile's Attorney stated that she has worked with other inmates teaching GED courses.

Journal of Chiropractic & Manipulative Therapies

A recent study published in the Journal Chiropractic & Manipulative Therapies found American Chiropractors initially recognized a Life Threatening Condition (LTC) in one of their patients on average of once every 2.5 years of practice.

Researchers from Texas Chiropractic College and Parker University surveyed 2,000 randomly selected chiropractors from a list of over 55,000 from the US. 29.9% self reported to the survey that contained questions about the LTC that they were the first to recognize over the course of their years of professional practice.

The Chiropractors in the study had collectively 11442 years in practice, mostly male, in practice over 15 years and included 3861 patients with a reported previously undiagnosed LTC.

The study revealed the most commonly presenting conditions were in order: carcinoma, abdominal aneurysm, deep vein thrombosis, stroke, myocardial infarction, subdural hematoma and a large group of other diagnoses. They claimed the intent of the study was to show that an increased awareness and emphasis on recognition of these conditions is a critical part of the chiropractic profession and chiropractic education.

Dr. Erica Harris

It's been less than a month since Dr Erica Harris DC of Reach Your Peak Chiropractic  found out she has acute mylogenous leukemia.

The bad news came on the afternoon of June 6. Immediately, Erica, a chiropractor based in Lynn Valley North Vancouver British Columbia was admitted to Vancouver General Hospital. Her first round of chemotherapy started June 8. It lasted for seven days.

Bone marrow biopsies have determined her chemo treatments so far were not successful. Between 60 - 70 % of her bone marrow is occupied by leukemic cells. As a result, Erica has been deemed a high-risk patient.

Her next round of chemotherapy — administered in harsher, larger doses — stared on June 30. It is estimated to last about a week, with a more than a month's recovery period scheduled afterward.

If this round of treatment does its job and Erica's condition goes into remission, she will need a bone marrow transplant immediately. If it doesn't, doctors at VGH have told the family there is nothing more they can do.

Doctors and the family have been searching international databases for a possible bone marrow donor. So far, no luck.

The family is turning to the public for help and asking anyone who agrees to donate their bone marrow to sign up for the donor registry at One Match Canada. Once you sign up online, Canadian Blood Services contacts you in 8-10 business days and sends you a swab kit – you can contact your local CBS office to see if you can shorten this timeline and/or have the swab done at their location.

A donor drive will also be set up in the Lynn Valley Town Centre on Friday June 6th as part of the community's summer concert series.

I found this story today on my daily search for chiropractic news, so I decided to share it on CE Cruncher and then I registered as a bone marrow donor. Consider registration, for Dr. Erica Harris and any other person that could benefit from your generosity.
