Kinesiology Taping at the Olympics

The London Olympics have started and the focus on international elite athletes will dominate the media. Every year the amount of colorful tape adorning the bodies of these athletes seems to grow exponentially, almost as if it is alive. The tape may not be alive but the enthusiasm in chiropractic for kinesiology taping sure is.

Kinesiology taping has progressed from a soccer player’s sprained ankle to a therapeutic resource with protocols for whiplash, shoulder strain, post-op and even torticolis. Many DCs are taking the time to learn techniques to aid their patients in sports as well as general practice.

According to the various manufacturers kinesiology taping offers: reduction in swelling and edema, improves joint mechanics and muscle function, impacts skin proprioception to reduce pain, reduces muscle spasm and fatigue, and aids reducing scar tissue and post surgical bruising.

Chiropractors at the London Olympics are covering athletes in various tapes and national colors. KT Tape Pro produced “JAM” Kinesiology Tape for the Jamaican Track and Field Team in the iconic colors of the Jamaican Flag.

Keep an eye out at the London Olympics for SpiderTech on Canadian triathlete and Olympic gold medalist Simon Whitfield. When asked about kinesiology taping he stated "Aches, pains and more serious injuries are a part of the sport. SpiderTech tape helps me manage pain and greatly improve my recovery time."

Kinesio Tape, founded by Japanese Chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase in 1979, took center stage at the last Olympics covering many athletes, most notably American Beach Volleyball Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh.

Dr. Kevin Jardine, Developer of Neuro-Structural Taping Technique and original creator of SpiderTech products, explains "Kinesiology tape is a crucial part of providing top level care to both world class Olympic athletes as well as your general patient base. The ability to extend the benefits of your treatment beyond the office can often make the difference in an athlete's recovery. The tape can even be worn during competition allowing the athletes to perform at their best.”

Chiropractors that are interested in expanding their practice can learn more about kinesiology taping and receive Chiropractic Continuing Education Hours with these seminars:
